garden glory

This garden has taken a whole heap of sweat equity - none of which is mine, if I can be perfectly honest. I find desert gardening fraught with too many complications, not the least of which involves having to provide every drop of water because 7 inches of rain a year just doesn't cut it, shade from the scorching sun, and protection from the ravages of hard frost (believe it, or not).

The hard frost part of this necessitated building a makeshift greenhouse of PVC pipe and plastic tarp. It also involved stretching the longest extension cord we own from the back of the house and across the pool deck (yes, think water and electricity), to illuminate a spotlight which kept the makeshift greenhouse at a cozy 67° during our "harsh" desert winter. I don't know how much has been spent so far on this tomato harvest, but we joke we'd have to sell them at the Farmers' Market for $47 a pound in order to make a marginal profit.

But aren't they pretty?

Almost too pretty to eat.

With love from The Valley of the Sun.
